The UK has a chronic shortage of affordable, sustainable homes
Mainstream construction techniques are slow, labour-intensive, and increase project costs, hindering national targets and worsening the shortage of affordable homes.
Rising costs and supply chain disruption for commodities like concrete, timber, and steel inflate build costs, reduce profit margins, and slow housing production, disproportionately affecting the affordability of homes.
A persistent failure to adequately train and support and value skilled tradespeople impedes scale, creates delays and further restricts housing supply.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS IN CONSTRUCTION
The industry’s immense burden on the planet is illustrated by stark statistics
This sector alone accounts for approximately 25% of the UK’s total carbon emissions (operational and embodied carbon), and 39% of all global emissions.
Traditional materials (cement, concrete, steel) use vast amounts of energy in their production, releasing substantial carbon into the atmosphere. Conventional construction also generates enormous landfill waste, including excavated earth from building sites.
